In the American West photo series by famous photographer, Richard Avedon, took portraits of individuals in the West. I could imagine that having the opportunity of viewing these portraits in person would have been breathtaking as the books do not give it enough justice. Mr. Avedon was probably not well known in the areas that he visited while photographing those individuals that were from different aspects of life. At the time of this event, Mr. Avedon was a well-known, and respected photographer. I was surprised to see that Mr. Avedon attended the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup and was able to capture many of his portraits during that specific event. I have attended that event once, and there are many interesting people you see which is what Mr. Avedon did. Mr. Avedon took portraits of individuals that most people would probably not have the nerve of approaching and asking if a picture could be taken. Mr. Avedon’s series had some controversy as some people felt as he was perhaps making fun of the people he photographed. Mr. Avedon was able to build a rapport with the individuals he photographed by talking to them, befriending them, and Mr. Avedon was respectful towards them. I believe this was enough to allow him to photograph them.

Mr. Avedon’s technique was more complicated than most people could comprehend specially if they were not professional photographers. Mr. Avedon chose to use a neutral background which I perceive that it made these portraits more stimulating. Concerning the portrait of Petra Alvarado “factory worker” that was taken on her birthday in 1982, Mr. Avedon used organic shapes instead of geometric shapes. Geometric shapes are more man made and organic shapes are shapes that are more naturalistic shapes such as these portrait(s). As for the black frame, I would consider that to be the only geometric aspect of the portraits.

Mr. Avedon used of positive space in these portraits would refer to subject of the picture and the position of the individual which is in the middle of the portrait. The negative space which would be the background which is neutral therefore making the main focus the actual image of the person in the portrait.

The element of contrast in Mr. Avedon’s portraits would be the color, or lack or color, in this case of the portraits. Also, the lighting would be another type of contrast used. I believe that Mr. Avedon’s choice of several contrast choices made these portraits more appealing, special, and unique.

The American West photo series was conceived when 1974, Avedon began having serious heart inflammations which took a toll on his health. This situation motivated Avedon to rethink his photography style hence he took on the American West project which shifted his focus from public figures to ordinary American people telling a story in each through the art. The project encompassed white neutral backgrounds in large portraits. The American West photo series was received with a lot of appreciation because it helped to turn around the stories of the ordinary persons who agreed to be photographed for the better.

             In the image provided, the geometric shapes are given by the cash since it has a regular appearance of a rectangle (is artificial). On the other hand, the woman is a representation of an organic shape since it has pentagonal symmetry, enclosing her body in legs, and arm stretched out in a pentagon, and each vertex connects with the body at the head. In terms of positive spaces, the woman, Petra Alvarado, in the image plus the cash she holds form this space as they are the subject of interest. The negative space in this case is the white background shown. The image has a normal contrast because there is a balance between black, white, and gray colors.

            The thick border lines Robert Avedon used in his photographed images function as real edges for his 8×10 negatives used for his 1970s portraits he had made of famous persons. They also function as works in their own right, and not just accompaniments in the images by becoming part of the décor. This is after Rolling Stone Magazine ordered 69 portraits of the same artistic design and published them with the black frames.

After reading about Jenny Holzer, now it’s your turn to make: TRUISMS: A SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT

As a group, students will produce a Jenny-Holzer-like artwork where a text is integrated into or imposed upon an object or in the public sphere. Each group will create a series of truisms.

Like Holzer your assignment will be to incorporate text into objects and create your own truisms.

Step 1:

Read over Part 2 and Part 3 so that you are familiar with them.

Step 2:

Brainstorm your truisms (At least one Canvas discussion should take place for this.). Topics can include (but are in no way limited to): race, gender, environmental, historical, cultural issues.  The only boundary is that your topic should relate to social justice.

Take a cue from Holzer! With your collective, brainstorm short phrases that fall under your group’s chosen topic. Do this  in the Group Discussion Board in Canvas. Remember that truisms are short and concise statements. Kick around some ideas on the Discussion Board.

Step 3:

Brainstorm Objects (At least one Canvas discussion should be devoted to this task.). Review your list of truisms. Next, think about what objects may fit the truisms. Use everyday objects.

Examples of objects include everything and anything: wrappers, flower pots—the list is endless. I generally discourage students from going out and purchasing something new. Examples of other objects might include parking meters, telephone poles, your breakfast cereal….

NOTE 1: I generally discourage the purchase of new objects; it’s not necessary for this project. On the other hand, please do distinguish between thoughtfully selecting found-objects and carelessly and hastily throwing things together. Successful projects will have thoughtfulness both in concept and in execution. Do take this project seriously, and don’t just throw things together.

NOTE 2: No school email or text discussions, please! All course group communication including discussions MUST stay in your Canvas group area. There are numerous reasons for this: First it’s school policy. Next, if a discussion is on a student’s text message, it is very hard for the instructor to access that information. Third, some students do not check emails regularly, especially for this class. Let’s keep the filed level and all use Canvas!

Topics should in some way encompass the topic of social justice. All points of views are welcome as long as the message is kept civil.

Step 4:

Experiment and Create (At least one Canvas discussion session should be devoted to this!)

  • As a group, experiment combining various objects and various texts.
  • Texts can be imposed on objects on a variety of ways; hand-written with sharpie or chalk, printed on a piece of paper and then glued or taped on, spelled out with other objects like sand, Cheerios, etc. Be innovative, show something new!
  • Settle on TWO final pieces of objects integrated with texts.
  • Finally, take digital photos of these art objects—two photos, one art object in each. Remember that your artwork will only be as good as its photograph!
  • Here are some tips on successful photography: It’s best and easiest to use even daylight. Maintain a good distance, so that the camera is not too far from or too close to your artwork. Keep unnecessary clutter out of the frame.

Her design was relatively minimalistic and modern when compared to what we historically think of as war memorials. There were no large statues, figures of soldiers, or depictions of battle. Instead, the fallen and missing names were imprinted on black walls that cascaded into the ground.  This design was not universally well received. Some thought that the lack of personal depiction of the soldiers, and the use of black instead of white marble, showed a disdain for the war and it’s participants. As a result, a more traditional memorial was eventually erected nearby in addition to Lin’s. 

The memorial in my area was also for the Vietnam War, though it had little in common with Lin’s memorial. The memorial, located in Cincinnati’s Eden Park, features a statue of two soldiers in uniform. Below the statues, the platform features a dedication in marble to all branches of the US military and a map of the Vietnam region. Cincinnati’s memorial is much smaller in size than the one in Washington D.C., and doesn’t invite the same level of interaction, however it is still an impactful piece of art that forces you to contemplate the loss of life during the war. 

Boccioni’s sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space looks forward and not to the past in the way that Cincinnati’s Vietnam War Memorial does. The figure in Boccioni’s war pushes onward forcefully to the future. The figure does not stop to contemplate history, loss, or politics; iis an ode to progress and invention. By contrast, The War Memorial depics to soldiers in a moment of pause. One puts his hand on the other’s solder for support. They are not progressing forward, simply frozen in a moment in time. This artwork wants us to pause and look backwards, not to rush madly forward.

I believe that Lins Vietnam War memorial was considered controversial was because of the lack of personal aspects. No statues or figures were used to show the fallen only names printed into brick. I visited the Vietnam War memorial in Midland Texas. At this memorial there were Multiple aspects shown. Unlike Lin’s memorial there were Statues and figures to show the fallen. I felt like this memorial was more personal rather than Lin’s where there were just name and no statues or figures.Wohaws drawing glorified the war while the memorial I visited was honoring the people who fought and the people who were lost during the war. The Renaissance was a rebirth of Greek and Roman culture, both of which placed the human at the center of the universe.
